Body-building and motorbikes filled my life - they were like an addiction. I was aggressive and hostile, with the language to go with it. I had a lot going for me – a girlfriend soon to become my wife, nice house, plenty money etc, yet I remember feeling strangely dissatisfied.
My girlfriend was ‘getting into God’ and invited me to church; so I went. My brother was a student at the time and he too ‘had found God’. He told me about Jesus: how he loved me, died to forgive me – I knew my brother had something I wanted and so he helped to pray and to invite God into my own life.
Two years on, following the birth of my first son, I wasn’t attending church and had just moved house. But God seemed to be on my case, this time in the town centre, with some Christians speaking about Jesus. At first I walked past, but felt compelled to listen. I found a church to go to and rediscovered my faith; encountering God, receiving the fullness of His love.
I’ve been involved in church wherever I’ve lived, and have been coming along to Acorn for about 15 months. By being part of a Small Group and the friendly atmosphere, I feel at home at Acorn. I’ve recently completed ‘Masterlife’, a course to help me get my head around not just what I believe but how that affects my life – it’s been a challenge, but a one worth taking.
And as for the bodybuilding and the bikes … well, I like to keep active, and enjoyed a biking holiday this summer with some friends from Acorn.
